Process

Before filming, I thought out an action plan in advance and designed a schedule for the actors so that it would be convenient for everyone to shoot at a certain time. Before filming, I did makeup for each character based on his mise-en-scene.

I shot the film opening mostly on schools camera, and some with memories on my phone, and because it was cold the camera was shaking a bit, but it added a little naturalness to the film, so it is not a big nuance. I chose several locations, and on which we shot pieces of film on different days and times and weather, depending on the scenario. I did the editing on the phone in the iMovie program, I also edited and added music there.

We shot home scenes in our attic, we found an empty bottle of alcohol and used it as an object for the mise en scene of “father”. We dragged pillows and blankets from our house there to make the bible room look like a bedroom and turned on a quiet light not to disturb the atmosphere of the film for the evening scene with “dad”.

When it was left to finish shooting just a little bit, and only the shots with memories was remaining to finish, the main actor flew out of the country for an indefinite amount of time and I had to find a replacement. I asked my friend to help, because visually he looks like the main actor from behind, so the scenes with memories mostly consist of pov shots and over the shoulder shots.

During the editing, I used cold colours and weak lighting in most frames to reproduce the impression of sadness, and once in the moment of the main character’s memories of a girl in black and white style. Also, to show the hero’s memories of his friend, I used smooth transitions from his emotions to memories and created a bright contrast so that it was visually noticeable that these are memories in his head. To create such an effect, I used a ghostly effect between frames about memories and a sharp contrasting transition on shots with their farewell in the main place.

I called my film “Snow Always Melts”. I chose the word “snow” because it contrasts with the mood and weather in the film, and if you personify it, you can understand that snow is a cold that lurks in the soul of cold and closed people, but since snow always melts, sooner or later there comes a period in everyone’s life when life is starting to get better and the person stands on the right path, and “spring” in the inner world takes place.
